homework time at the LaoPiams

My family is going well. I think there's a chance they wanted an american so my "Dad" would have someone to do his English homework for him. Last night he came over to the house I live in, just across the yard, and was sitting around drinking and smoking and chatting as I ate and talked on the phone to the states. Then I got out my homework and he proceeded to ask me to do his. I tried to tell him I had my own work to do, so he said, ok, after, ok tomorrow. I said I will help him, but not do it for him. I tried to help, but he just wanted me to write the answers. He kept saying he didn't understand English. (which I know isn't totally true). It went on and on. I even told him I have a big exam to study for and if I don't pass I'll get sent back to the states. He didn't seem to care. It will be interesting to see what happens today. I don't want t have to bury myself in my work to avoid doing his work.

The kicker is... he's a school principle!!!

check in from เรเชส

Still having my ups and downs. I'm getting frustrated with things that are different from the way I'm used to (or what seems most rational to me), but I'm reminding myself that's why I'm here: to expereicne a new culture. And boy am I.

I never thought I'd be perfectly fine showering with big cochroach next to me. I have become one with the insects. Except the ants. One of the five principles of Buddism is not to kill which means they don't even swat the mosquitoes. Ants are living the fat life in Thailand! They are everywhere. Don't worry if you drop a crumb on the floor, the ants will seize and conquer, promptly. Sometimes I feel like the ants are crawling all over me.

On a positive note, my thai language is going really well.I'm making lots of progress. We started reading/writing thai now which helps me a lot with the pronunciation. Here's my name: เรเชส

On a negative note I'm frustrated with a lot of the beurocracy in the Peace Corps. I didn't imagine I'd be treated like an insignificant employee as much as I am. Very little personal consideration. I am mostly pissed becasue I can't do a half marathon in Bangkok (2 hours from here), not because I'll miss any class, but just because we're not allowed to leave training area during training. Poo.

But I've still been training and really impressed with my running, with the hopes that I can get my host family to take me. That's legal, they just don't want me traveling alone.

top of the world

hello hello,
All is going smashing right now. I figured I should send out the message because I know many of you heard from me last when I was down in the dumps. I'm eating better and had an amazing run yesterday. Down dirt roads, passing by sugar cane fields and palm trees as the sun was setting. I set a goal to push myself and way surpassed my desired time which made me feel fabulous. The most uplifting part was all the amazing smiles I got when people passd on their motorbikes. People in Thailand smile with their whole face, not just their mouth. They are so excited to see me too; yelling "Hello, Hello!!" as I run by.
