check in from เรเชส

Still having my ups and downs. I'm getting frustrated with things that are different from the way I'm used to (or what seems most rational to me), but I'm reminding myself that's why I'm here: to expereicne a new culture. And boy am I.

I never thought I'd be perfectly fine showering with big cochroach next to me. I have become one with the insects. Except the ants. One of the five principles of Buddism is not to kill which means they don't even swat the mosquitoes. Ants are living the fat life in Thailand! They are everywhere. Don't worry if you drop a crumb on the floor, the ants will seize and conquer, promptly. Sometimes I feel like the ants are crawling all over me.

On a positive note, my thai language is going really well.I'm making lots of progress. We started reading/writing thai now which helps me a lot with the pronunciation. Here's my name: เรเชส

On a negative note I'm frustrated with a lot of the beurocracy in the Peace Corps. I didn't imagine I'd be treated like an insignificant employee as much as I am. Very little personal consideration. I am mostly pissed becasue I can't do a half marathon in Bangkok (2 hours from here), not because I'll miss any class, but just because we're not allowed to leave training area during training. Poo.

But I've still been training and really impressed with my running, with the hopes that I can get my host family to take me. That's legal, they just don't want me traveling alone.
